I think it really depends on the stage of life that you are at.
Singles or young professional couples may prefer suburbs closer to city or surf. However, quite a lot of our clients who have children find the Upper North Shore to be desirable because of (1) availability of the North Shore train line for easy commuting, (2) larger plots of land and backyard, (3) the number of excellent public and private schools in suburbs ranging from Roseville to Hornsby. Indeed, it’s not unusual for families to relocate simply for the sake of schooling!
Although the sandy beaches are not exactly on the doorstep, there are lots of other ‘lifestyle’ elements such as Lane Cove National Park and Middle Harbour. Not to mention lots of other smaller neighbourhood parks and playgrounds for the kids.
